Our analysts have tested this together with the health authorities of the Magnesium Health Institute. Their conclusion is set out below: 

We do not recommend using flakes as a base for making highly concentrated “magnesium oil” of more than 5%. The flakes are produced by a process with an evaporation step. The Brine from the source is heated to approximately 160 degrees Celsius, during which process the water is evaporated until a concentration of 47% magnesium chloride is reached. This concentration is equivalent to the ratio of magnesium chloride to water as Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate [MgCl2.6 (H2O)], which is a natural stable form as it cools and crystallises on the cooling belt. Due to the heating and evaporation, a small amount of MgCl2 will decompose into MgOHCl (magnesium hydroxide chloride), MgCO3 (magnesium carbonate) and some HCl (hydrochloric acid) in the vapour stream. These products are also responsible for the white haze that becomes visible after dissolving the flakes. These products are not immediately dangerous, but are unavoidable during the production of the flakes.

The flakes are perfect for applications up to 5%, such as (foot) bath applications. For topical applications with higher concentrations, we recommend the pure natural magnesium oil (brine) directly from the source, without any processing steps. This magnesium oil has been specially selected for this application and is guaranteed by the Zechstein Inside batch protocol.

The Zechstein source is unique in terms of quality and purity. As Zechstein Minerals, we developed a selection procedure with Nedmag (shareholder), who is the operator of the source. Nedmag extracts the magnesium chloride brine from various sources. The selection procedure is called the Zechstein Inside® batch protocol (ZI protocol) and has several stages before a guaranteed and certified batch can be produced. 

Based on the batch protocol, Zechstein Minerals checks production on a daily basis, based on analyses. Zechstein Minerals’ ZI protocol is based on Nedmag’s GMP procedures.

If the daily analyses fall within the requirements of the Zechstein Inside® quality, the ZI batch can be scheduled. This production is then run under the quality responsibility of Zechstein Minerals and stored separately. Samples for detailed analysis are taken from the batch produced.

An element scan on the ICP forms the basis of the analysis report. If this analysis meets the conditions of the Zechstein Inside quality, the batch will receive its Certificate of Origin (CoO) and the Zechstein Inside ® quality label.

1 ml of magnesium oil contains 31% magnesium chloride ( MgCl2) on mass.
1 ml weighs 1,3 gram so in 1 ml must be 403 mg MgCl2. ( 31% x 1,3)
Molmass of MgCl2 is 95,2
Molmass of Mg is 24,3
So elemental magnesium (Mg) content in 1 ml is 24,3/95,2 x 403 = 103 mg elemental Mg in 1 ml.

Gel
1 ml of magnesium gel contains 30% magnesium chloride ( MgCl2) on mass.
1 ml weighs 1,3 gram so in 1 ml must be 390 mg MgCl2.
Molmass of MgCl2 is 95,2
Molmass of Mg is 24,3
So elemental magnesium (Mg) content in 1 ml is 24,3/95,2 x 390 = 100 mg elemental Mg in 1 ml.

Flakes
Magnesium flakes contains 47% magnesium chloride ( MgCl2) on mass.
So in 1 kg of magnesium flakes is 470 gram magnesium MgCl2.
Molmass of MgCl2 is 95,2
Molmass of Mg is 24,3
So elemental magnesium (Mg) content in 1 gram is 470 / 95,2 * 24,3 = 120 mg elemental Mg (12%).

Our magnesium products are based from the ancient Zechstein Sea. This sea existed 250 million years ago. So, our products are over 250 million years old. Therefore it is hard to mention an expiry date. If the products are stored dry and under normal circumstances, you can keep it for years. But for consumerproducts we advise een expiry date of 36 months after opening the package.

We have certifications on request available for our customers on which we declare that our Zechstein Inside Magnesium Chloride is 100% halal, 100% kosher, 100% vegan and not tested on animals.

The effectiveness of magnesium is also depending of the time working on your skin. After about 15 minutes you can remove what is left on your skin.

Don't worry if you feel a light sensation on the skin after using Zechstein magnesium. Because of the high concentration of magnesium chloride on a sensititve skin, it can react, but that is harmless. After using it more frequently, the effect will normally decrease. Or you can combine it with water to reduce the concentration of magnesium chloride. People with severe skin problems can use the flakes in a footbath as an alternative solution.

Zechstein magnesium oil is not ingested, but rather sprayed directly onto the skin and transported from there to the cells. As a result, the dosage can be regulated as required. The usual side effects are avoided even in the case of higher doses, while our skin can self-regulate the absorption of magnesium. Persons suffering from severe kidney function disorders or cardiac conduction disorders (AV block) or a rare muscle disease, myasthenia gravis, should be careful when taking magnesium and should consult their doctor. Physical activities cause the body to require significantly more magnesium due to increased muscle actions. In addition, increased perspiration means that more magnesium is exuded. Sufficient magnesium prevents muscle cramps, a build-up of lactic acid, which is also responsible for sore muscles, and at the same time increases endurance. It protects from injuries and shortens recovery time. The magnesium oil is helpful in spray form during cramps and after exercises to recover. Also flakes in a (foot)bath can be a relaxing way to maintain a good balance of magnesium in your body. (Dr. Barbara Hendel)
